Dr. LIU is currently a professor of Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He got his PhD from Institute of Biophysics, CAS in 2003. He got his first Postdoc Training in University of Michigan from Nov. 2003 to Apr. 2005. Then he was trained as a postdoc in Yale University in May. 2005. After one year, he moved to the University of Chicago. In Chicago, he was appointed as research associate (assistant professor). He was recruited as a professor in Beijing Institute of Genomics in 2009.

 

Introduction:

 

Our group is trying to integrate genomics method to understand some fundamental questions in epigenetic inheritance, animal development and cancer pathogenesis.

 

1) Epigenetic inheritance and reprogramming during embryogenesis.

 

It is a mystery how a fertilized egg can develop into an animal, which can include more than 200 different cells with different phenotype and functions. Recent studies show the epigenetic information can define animal’s development. One long standing challenge in biology is whether epigenetic information can be inherited by the offspring from parents. Our lab used zebrafish as the model to study the DNA methylation inheritance. Strikingly, we found that Sperm DNA methylome is inherited by early embryos, while oocyte methylome is discarded (Cell , 2013)

 

This finding indicates not only DNA sequences can be inherited, but also DNA methylome of sperm can be inherited by zebrafish embryos. Recently, we also revealed the programming and inheritance of parental DNA methylomes in mammals (Cell, 2014).

 

Now, we are investigating the mechanism how embryos select sperm methylome and discard oocyte methylome. We will also study the function of DNA methylome in guiding embryogenesis.

 

2) Cancer pathogenesis

 

Cancer is caused by genetic mutations, and epigenetics has been showed to be critical for tumorigenesis. Therefore, we are trying to identify the critical genetics and epigenetics mutations that drive tumorigenesis by integration of genomics, pathology, genetics and cell biological methods. Additionally, we want to translate the basic research into clinical useful applications.
